Generative engine optimization

When the answer replaces the result

Search engines increasingly answer instead of listing. GEO is the practice of staying visible, quotable and correctly represented inside those answers — and it is a young enough discipline that the vocabulary, the tooling and the evidence base are all still forming. This hub tracks all three.

What GEO actually is

Generative engine optimization — also written AEO (answer engine optimization) or LLMO — covers the work of making a source likely to be retrieved, cited and accurately summarised by a system that generates prose rather than returning ten links. It applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google, to Bing's generative answers, to assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot, and to any retrieval-augmented product that reads the open web at query time.

The mechanics are not mysterious. Most generative answers are grounded: the system runs one or more retrieval passes, pulls a handful of documents or passages, and writes from them. That means the classical prerequisites still bind — a page that cannot be crawled, cannot be parsed, or does not rank for the retrieval query will rarely be cited. What changes is everything downstream of retrieval: which passage gets lifted, whether your brand is named, whether the claim survives summarisation intact, and whether the citation is even clickable.

Where GEO genuinely differs from SEO

  • The unit of visibility is a passage, not a page. Retrieval usually operates over chunks. Self-contained sections that answer one question without depending on surrounding context survive chunking better than sprawling narrative pages.
  • Brand mentions matter independently of links. A model can name a company it never links to. Share of citation and share of mention have become measurable objectives in their own right.
  • Access is negotiated separately. Training crawlers, retrieval crawlers and user-triggered fetchers are different agents with different robots.txt tokens. Blocking one does not block the others, and blocking the wrong one can remove you from answers while doing nothing about training.
  • Measurement is indirect. There is no Search Console for generative answers. Practitioners triangulate from referral traffic, prompt-sampling panels, brand-mention monitoring and server logs.
  • Answers are non-deterministic. The same prompt can produce different citations across runs, models and regions, so single observations prove very little. Sampling is mandatory.

What is still unsettled

Be sceptical of confident numbers in this space, including confident numbers about how much traffic AI answers destroy or create. Published estimates disagree sharply because they measure different things — some count impressions, some count sessions, some model an entire market from a panel. The Atlas links to the underlying studies rather than restating their headline figures, so you can check the methodology before you quote it.

The same caution applies to tactics. Conventions such as llms.txt are proposals with uneven adoption, not standards that engines are known to honour. Treat any claim that a specific file, schema or phrasing trick guarantees citation as a hypothesis to test, not a technique to deploy at scale.

A defensible starting point

  1. Audit crawler access deliberately — decide per agent, not with one blanket rule. See the crawler reference.
  2. Make key claims extractable: clear headings, self-contained answers, explicit entities, dates and sources on the page.
  3. Keep structured data accurate; it remains the cheapest way to state facts unambiguously.
  4. Establish a baseline of prompts that matter to your business and sample them on a schedule.
  5. Track brand mentions and citation share alongside rankings, not instead of them.
  6. Watch referral traffic from assistant domains separately in analytics.
