Guidance for content in Google's AI experiences
Google published its first consolidated guidance on how content is selected for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What changed
Google published a post setting out what publishers should do to perform well in AI Overviews and AI Mode, stating that there is no separate optimisation track and that ordinary Search indexing, technical accessibility and content quality determine eligibility. It highlighted unique and satisfying content, good page experience, appropriate structured data, and preview controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet for publishers who want to limit use. It also explained that AI features draw on the same index as conventional results. Only the month is documented here.
Timing
Rollout began 1 May 2025. No completion date was announced. Rankings typically remain unstable for the whole rollout window, so measurements taken inside it are not a reliable read on the outcome.
