Continuous scroll removed from search results
Google reversed continuous scrolling and restored pagination, first on desktop and then on mobile.
What changed
Less than two years after extending continuous scroll to desktop, Google confirmed it was removing the feature and returning to a paginated results page with a next-page control. Google said the change made results load faster and that continuous scroll had not improved satisfaction as expected. Desktop reverted first, with mobile following over subsequent weeks. Search Console impression counts for deeper positions fell as a result, which affected year-on-year reporting. Only the month is documented here, so the start date is set to the first of the month.
Timing
Rollout began 1 June 2024. No completion date was announced. Rankings typically remain unstable for the whole rollout window, so measurements taken inside it are not a reliable read on the outcome.
