August 2022 helpful content update
Launch of the helpful content system, a site-wide signal demoting content made mainly for search engines rather than people.
What changed
Google announced a new automated, site-wide classifier that identified sites with a high proportion of unhelpful, search-first content and reduced the ranking of the whole site, including its genuinely useful pages. It rolled out from 25 August to 9 September 2022 and initially applied only to English-language content globally. Google published a self-assessment questionnaire framed around people-first content and said the signal was weighted and would reverse over a period of months once unhelpful content was removed. The system was later folded into core ranking in March 2024.
Timing
Announced on 18 August 2022, with rollout beginning 25 August 2022. Google declared it complete on 9 September 2022, 15 days later. Rankings typically remain unstable for the whole rollout window, so measurements taken inside it are not a reliable read on the outcome.
