Page experience update (mobile) rollout

Core Web Vitals and other page experience signals began affecting mobile ranking, rolled out gradually over two and a half months.

What changed

After a delay from the original May target, Google began using page experience — Core Web Vitals plus mobile-friendliness, HTTPS and absence of intrusive interstitials — as a mobile ranking signal from mid-June 2021, completing at the end of August. Google described the effect as a tiebreaker between pages of similar relevance rather than a strong signal, and the measured impact on rankings was modest. The AMP requirement for the top stories carousel was dropped at the same time.

Timing

Announced on 19 April 2021, with rollout beginning 15 June 2021. Google declared it complete on 31 August 2021, 77 days later. Rankings typically remain unstable for the whole rollout window, so measurements taken inside it are not a reliable read on the outcome.
