Scaled content abuse spam policy
Google replaced its automatically generated content policy with one covering content produced at scale to manipulate rankings, regardless of production method.
What changed
The new policy prohibits generating many pages primarily to manipulate search rankings and provide little value to users, explicitly stating that it applies whether the content is produced by automation, by humans or by a combination of both. This closed the loophole where publishers argued that human editing of AI output exempted them. Google said it enforces the policy both algorithmically and through manual actions. It formed part of the same announcement as the March 2024 core and spam updates.
Timing
Rollout began 5 March 2024. No completion date was announced. Rankings typically remain unstable for the whole rollout window, so measurements taken inside it are not a reliable read on the outcome.
