Site reputation abuse spam policy

Google banned publishing third-party content on an established site mainly to exploit that site's ranking signals, widely known as parasite SEO.

What changed

The policy targets arrangements where a reputable publisher hosts unrelated third-party pages — typically coupon, casino or loan content — with little oversight, in order to trade on the host domain's authority. Google gave two months' notice before enforcement began on 5 May 2024 so publishers could wind down such arrangements. Initial enforcement was through manual actions against major news and education sites, and Google published examples distinguishing legitimate syndicated or sponsored content from abuse.

Timing

Announced on 5 March 2024, with rollout beginning 5 May 2024. No completion date was announced. Rankings typically remain unstable for the whole rollout window, so measurements taken inside it are not a reliable read on the outcome.
