US v. Google remedies ruling
The court ordered Google to share search index and user interaction data with competitors and barred exclusive default search contracts.
What changed
On 2 September 2025 Judge Mehta issued the remedies decision in the US search monopoly case. Google was required to share certain search index and user interaction data with qualified competitors and prohibited from entering exclusive contracts that make its search the automatic default. The court declined to order divestiture of Chrome or Android. The data-sharing remedy is potentially the most consequential for the search market, since access to interaction data has been a principal barrier to building a competitive general search engine.
